What’s the science behind Hair Regrowth using Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is proven to improve the condition of a variety of non-scaring alopecia’s including, androgenic alopecia, areata alopecia and chemotherapy-induced alopecia, making it effective for hair growth in the majority of cases of hair loss.
This treatment was discovered accidentally. In the Late 1960’s a Physician, Endre Mester, wanted to research the effect of LLLT on cancer. He found that LLLT didn’t cause cancer but instead caused improved hair regrowth in the shaved regions of his test subjects.
There have been numerous clinical studies to test the effectiveness of LLLT as a treatment for hair loss and to encourage new hair growth. One study found that in terms of hair count, both sexes and all areas of the scalp had substantial improvement with as much as 120% increased growth. A more recent study in 2014, found that after 16 weeks of treatment there was a mean average increase in hair growth of 35% amongst androgenetic alopecia sufferers.
LLLT is believed to work through a process known as photo-biostimulation (similar to photosynthesis which makes plants grow). The light penetrates deep into the scalp increasing hair follicle activity at a cellular level, increasing ATP production, and improving growth factors.
The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: Growth (Anagen), Resting (Telogen) and Transition (Catagen). At any given time, 10-20% of your hair is in the Catagen or Telogen phase waiting to be shed and replaced by an active Anagen hair. LLLT works to stimulate anagen re-entry in resting (telogen) hair follicles, prolonging the length of the growth (anagen) phase and preventing the shedding phase (catagen) developing prematurely for results that last.
How Safe Is It?
The use of lasers may make it sound dangerous, but the Lescolton Laser Hair Revival System couldn’t be safer.
